About Unix timestamps
What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp counts seconds (or milliseconds) since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC. It's timezone-independent, making it ideal for APIs and webhook payloads where the receiver might be in a different timezone.
Seconds or milliseconds — how do I tell?
10-digit timestamps are seconds (most APIs, including Stripe). 13-digit timestamps are milliseconds (JavaScript's
Date.now(), Java). This tool auto-detects based on digit count. A timestamp larger than 9999999999 is treated as milliseconds. What timezone are webhook timestamps in?
Unix timestamps are always UTC. The number itself doesn't change with timezone — only the display does. When you see
"created": 1700000000 in a Stripe webhook, that's seconds since Unix epoch in UTC.What is the year 2038 problem?
32-bit signed integers max out at 2,147,483,647 — which is January 19, 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. Systems using 32-bit timestamps will overflow at that point. Modern systems use 64-bit timestamps which won't overflow for hundreds of billions of years.
Debugging webhook payloads?
HookDeploy captures every webhook with full headers and body, so you can inspect timestamps and all other fields in real time.
